This is definatley a technique that I need to practice. It’s hard for me to hit this in live sparring but, practice makes perfect.

  • dustin key says:

This is a good technique to counter the sprawl. if all the dtails are performed it is very effective

  • JEREMY HUNT says:

Nice, very nice…and easy to understand, and apply…like all of Mr Lloyds vids…and instructions usually are. Thanks for sharing the info…and not holding back the good stuff.

  • Chris Robinson says:

Once again great stuff. Grats on the BB JT.

  • Chris says:

I’ve seen Vitor Shaolin use this a lot – it is a fantastic technique and great with all of the details.

  • jay says:

i like the way he looks for the contact on his opponents arm so he feels his opponent, i like that, and feeling is a major aspect of fighting in general. i also like when he holds and grabs his opponents leg, again feeling and protecting. he brakes it down very well. old move new way to look at it. thanks jt and congrats on your blk belt. take care peace

  • Very nice technique. Very fluid.

Also congrats on the Black Belt JT and congrats to Lloyd Irvin for adding another quality black belt to his stable.

    Take care and God bless.

  • JOHN says:

I love this move I got more detail out of it from this video thanks

  • Chris says:

Nice technique. The only thing I would alter is the final step. You really don’t want to reach your left hand around his waist. You could get elevated or swept if he grabs that wrist. Instead, I would grab far ankle knocking him off his base.

  • Kawika R says:

I havent seen this technique done but im bound to give it a go at class. It looks highly effective though! Great video guys!

  • ausgepicht says:

    Classic peek-out!

  • Lucas says:

The arm detail makes it a huge difference!! Then he completes it with holding the leg tight so your opponet doesnt take your back! Great teaching. Thanks for the technique! By the way…CONGRATS ON THAT BLACK BELLLLTTTT!! OOOOZZZZZZ!

  • Chris C. says:

Good technique! We went over this move in class a few months ago and It’s nice.

  • Chris Reichert says:

Thanks for the details on this technique. I usually pull guard so this is something good for me to work on!

  • sergei says:

Crispy switch! And quite natural flow of the movements.

  • Rogelio "Bozo" Avelino says:

The good old Sitout. There is a very sweet counter to this counter on the Cholitzu video. I love the chess match.

Hey, JT, congratulations are not necessary because you earned that Black Belt bro. Good on ya and thanks for sharing your “secrets.” Thats a ballsy thing to do when you’rre still competing. LOL. Good Job Team Lloyd Irvin!

  • Dan says:

Awesome. I always get caught in that and never know what to do. Thanks.

  • Chris M says:

I have problems when somebody sprawls on me, and I find myself expending more energy trying to finish the takedown. I’m real happy to see this counter, it’ll help me becomre more efficient! Congrats on the black belt once again, JT!

  • rui says:

great technique, great details. now, let´s practice…

  • Semaj says:

his is an amazing & 1 of the most important techniques you could know & drill for tryinrg to take good stand-up guys down. I am going to be drilling this over & over. I actually did this in a tournament once by accident but now that I see the mechanics I know I will be taking alot of guys down with this 1! Thanks So Much Lloyd Irvin & J.T. You guys are great for posting these!

  • Sam says:

    As always …

Great explanations in breaking down ALL of the small, but IMPORTANT, details …

  • Will says:

Awsome! Can’t wait for the video set to come out!

  • Chris says:

that detail on the arm is what I have been missing. Thanks JT!

  • david says:

this technique is very good for people that dont have very good takedowns too. ive used this many times since i don’t have the best take downs. very well explained.

  • Ed says:

Another great video…keep ‘em coming! I learn so much from these technical, yet easy to understand, videos. Great job!

  • RobertCharles says:

When I saw this move shown the elbow actually gripped the arm for control and to help with the sit-out. The inside arm to the opponent’s near leg is new to me and the explanation for it makes good sense. I like how JT keeps his knees off the mat and back from his opponent at the end of the move to prevent any kneebar attempt. A big congrats on the promotion JT!

  • jim says:

Great explanation! Easy to understand and best it works!!!
I use this but I love the video to bring it home.

  • Aaron says:

    Thanks for the vid!

  • Josh says:

I like this technique for finishing a takedown against an opponent with mediocre takedown defense, but I’ve always been hesitant to spend a lot of time drilling it, because it really relies on the opponent’s making some major mistakes in defending the takedown.

The biggest thing is that, as you can see in the video, Mike has his arms hanging down around JT’s midsection – that’s a huge no-no for takedown defense. Wrestling coaches have always taught me to keep my elbows glued to my sides (unless going for a specific counter, like a tight-waist). This move is – as far as I know – ineffective if the opponent keeps good pressure (in part, by staying off his knees), controls the shooter’s head and most importantly keeps his elbows glued to his own ribs.

That being said, I think it’s still worth learning for when an opponent slips up or doesn’t have good wrestling. My only point is that it can be totally shut down by decent, basic takedown defense. On the other hand, if JT or other grapplers have had success with this move against GOOD wrestlers, I will gladly put my foot in my mouth :)

  • Rich says:

    Very nice, oldie but goodie.

  • Jason says:

Great video, thank you! I’m rolling in an hour so I’m going to try it tonight!

  • Jon says:

Awesome job JT! That was a great transition to back. I have no experience in judo or wrestling and I tend to have a hard time with wrestlers. I know this technique will help! Congrats on the Black belt!!!

  • lorenzodamarith says:

    hello,

coach torres, once again, you make a very good presentation. you make everything about training this technique easy.

we just played with this after watching your video. it works very nicely.

coach irvin, you are like king midas… every technique you touch turns to gold! can’t wait for the set!

    thanks

  • Greg says:

CONGRATS on the Black Belt. Thank you for the technique. I have NO wrestling skills. I have seen this b4 and will try it again. Your explanation about the leg grab and contacting the arm were new to me. You continue to impress me with your attention to detail

  • Drew says:

Thanks for that I’ve been having trouble with them sprawling out like that, next time I will be ready!

Hey J.T. just want to say good job on you acheivement to black belt at 19 you have what most will never have the fearlesness to go after your dreams! thank you for your tips and keep up the good work!

  • Norbert says:

Congrats on the Black Belt, you definately deserve it.

  • Bruce says:

favorite part of my day, these videos are always good techniques i was unaware of, or needed minor details to prefect.

congrats to JT on the promotion.

  • Todd says:

Great basic technique and explanation of key details. Adding the grab of the leg will increase my success with a transition to the back as sometimes when I go for this technique my opponents move back and prevent me from getting to their back. Besides looking for this technique from a countered double leg, I also look for it if I have turtled up on my knees when escaping from bottom side control and my opponent sprawls out to counter.

  • Shewp says:

Great technique. Classic wrestling peek out. My only alteratino is to take my left hand and “hook” near his left knee to ruin his base. I agree with the previous gentleman that if you reach for the left hip, a great freestyle wrestler or judoka can grab your wrist and sweep you, Congrats on the Black belt, boss. Do it up with the big boys!

  • Louis says:

Great video on a most over looked technique. The attention to detail is super. I especially liked the arm to prevent the back mount detail.

Congratulations on the promotion and the win. Keep up the hard work!

  • Mike says:

Outstanding job at detailing this technique. I find the description of how you move, applying your weight and strength against your opponent, to control his response to you, a great aid to me. Being new to grappling I am finding that it is a lot more than just going through the motions. Thanks a lot. And congrats on your promotion.

  • Ryan says:

Way to go on your black belt, your hard work really shows. How many years have you been doing bjj for? I read an article which said you started at thirteen, but wasn’t sure if that was true. Anyways about the move; There are a lot of wrestlers at my school so I am always afraid to shoot, but I will drill this for a couple days and see if I can make it work for me.

  • Jerome says:

Counter the Sprawl. JT breaks it down very well. Good technique to always keep in the arsenal.
Big congrats on your BJJ black belt promotion. We all know you will make a good instructor. Please keep the training video`s coming. Coach Irvin thank you again for sharing the knowledge. We all enjoy watching JT break it down for us.

  • Rouven says:

Thanks for the details and for breaking it done like that. I allready tried this one several times. Sometimes it did work and sometimes it didn’t. After seeing the details I know now what I have to change.

  • jonny varron says:

thats actually a great thing grabbing the leg,so the other cant spin out!beautiful!congrats on the black belt!i look forward to seeing you compete against the other black belts!

  • Joe Steele says:

Great move, just be careful that the person on top sprawling doesnt underhook the arm or you will find yourself in a neck crank when you sit out.

  • Mark says:

the sit out a classic. great for when he clasps his hands too for a inverted bear hug grip. nice one is sitting out and shoulder rolling to take head control too. is there a leg attack for the guy sprawling when you post????

  • aud acosta says:

very interesting and detailed explanation on the sprawl and how to counter it very helpful video thanks

  • Derick says:

Its a nice technique but it is hard to hit when your opponent sprawls to the front headlock or otherwise puts a lot of pressure on your head.
